HeiGIT International Postdoctoral Fellowships for GIScience Research for Climate Action

Dear Postdoctoral Scholars and Researchers,

You are a highly motivated researcher who loves spatial data science and open geodata? You want to use your expertise for the benefit of society and the environment – in particular stimulating Climate Action or enhancing Humanitarian Aid related to Climate Resilience? You want to improve the availability and quality of open geographic information for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation and develop high resolution spatial indicators or GIScience methods for open, non-profit applications in those areas? Then we actually might have a suitable and interesting opportunity for you!

HeiGIT gGmbH (Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology) at Heidelberg University is pleased to announce a call for applications for a

Postdoctoral Fellowship (6 – 12 months)

focused on GIScience research, with a special emphasis on work related to upscaling actionable geoinformation for climate mitigation and adaptation. This fellowship provides an exciting opportunity for scholars to contribute to cutting-edge research and innovation in the field of geoinformatics, with a particular focus on leveraging and enhancing open geodata, especially Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) and Remote Sensing for climate action or humanitarian aid.

About HeiGIT: HeiGIT gGmbH, is a leading applied non-profit research institute dedicated to advancing the field of geoinformatics. The objective of HeiGIT is to improve knowledge and technology transfer from fundamental research in geoinformatics to practical applications. Our vision is a better society and environment by improving open geoinformation and geoinformation technology. Our mission is to provide research and development to support decision making in the field of climate action, sustainable mobility and humanitarian aid. We accomplish this through open geoinformation, open methods, open software and close collaboration with our partners. Our work encompasses a wide range of applications, from developing innovative tools and methodologies to address societal challenges to promoting open geospatial data for the greater good.

Fellowship Overview:

  • Duration:  6-12 months (modifications negotiable depending on circumstances)
  • Location: Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT), Heidelberg, Germany
  • Focus Areas: Geoinformation for Climate Action (Climate Mitigation, Climate Adaption & Resilience)

Research Themes:

Your work should contribute two one of our research topics listed below and be closely related to the current work at HeiGIT. This will allow to maximize synergies between you and the researchers at HeiGIT and the affiliated GIScience research group at Heidelberg University.

  • Climate Action: Develop high-resolution spatial indicators and tools related to addressing climate change, including the development of methods and services for monitoring and mitigating its impacts.
  • Humanitarian Aid: Enhance the application of geoinformation technologies in humanitarian aid efforts, with a focus on improving the availability and usage of geospatial data for disaster response, risk exposure modeling, and climate resilience.
  • Open Geodata & VGI: Contribute to developing methods and tools for the enhancement and utilization of open geospatial data, especially Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) such as OpenStretMap (OSM) for Climate Mitigation and Adaptation.

Eligibility:

  • Scholars with a PhD in GIScience, computer science, geography, environmental studies, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated in-depth geoinformatics research experience related to climate action or humanitarian aid, esp. utilizing and enhancing open geodata (esp. VGI) in those domains.
  • Strong programming, machine learning or spatial data analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Team player, working closely together with colleagues at HeiGIT and GIScience Group at Heidelberg University.

Application Process: Interested scholars should submit the following documents to jobs@heigit.org by 15.03.2024.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV), including references and transcripts with grades
  • Short cover letter outlining research interests related to the work at HeiGIT and relevant experience
  • Sample of recent research work (published paper or thesis)
  • Preferred timeframe (availability)

Benefits:

  • Working with a motivated interdisciplinary team on topics relevant for the society and environment
  • Access to state-of-the-art research facilities and resources
  • Collaboration opportunities with leading experts in GIScience
  • Networking with the international research community and relevant stakeholders in the respective domains

We look forward to receiving your applications and welcoming a diverse group of international scholars to contribute to impactful GIScience research at HeiGIT.

We stand for equal opportunities. We welcome all people regardless of age, origin, gender, sexual identity, religion or disability.
